Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC

Adobe? Photoshop? Lightroom? Classic? CC is the most important piece of software in most photographers’ tool kits. This Lightroom class begins with processing RAW files into JPEGs, managing an efficient workflow, and organizing your library of images. We then quickly move into the how’s and why’s of adjusting photos to turn images out of camera into brilliant, vibrant works of art.

What is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom?

For anyone looking to gain a strong working knowledge of Lightroom this class will most definitely provide that. The class setting was relaxed and I was encouraged to ask questions, which always helps me own the material. Using what I’ve learned plus the additional printed material has made my workflow far more efficient and the whole process of editing more enjoyable. -Christina H?bert

Most modern DSLR cameras can take RAW images which contain far more information than the JPEG files most users are accustomed to. However, working with these special RAW files requires software capable of making use of all that extra information. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic is powerful software which allows you to process the RAW images taken by your DSLR camera into JPEGs, expressing your artistic vision.

Unlike working with JPEG files in other programs, Lightroom is made for preserving the details in the shadows and blacks, and in the highlights and whites by working with RAW files. When a digital camera shoots JPEGs it clips them and loses the detail even before sending the image to the memory card and it’s lost forever. Shooting in RAW opens up this world of lost color, tone, and detail, but it also requires powerful software like Lightroom to take advantage of these vibrant parts of your photos.

Lightroom is also an incredible interface for managing, organizing, documenting, and searching for images regardless of where they are actually stored on your computer, or what their file name is. This secondary function has fundamentally changed the way professional photographers around the world have managed their digital files.

What is Taught in the Class and How is it Taught?

This Adobe Lightroom course is based on the same format as The CPLC’s popular Using Your DSLR or Mirrorless Camera and Portrait Lighting Workshop photography classes. The course focuses on hands-on learning, with every theoretical principle and “why?” concept immediately translated into hands-on answers.

Student comes to understand the “how” by working on their own computers with key sample images supplied by the CPLC in guided exercises that tour the ins-and-outs of the program and build confidence and the skills for students to work on their own photos.

The class is taught with the instructor demonstrating live to the students the concepts being taught, and manipulating images on a projected screen, with students following along on their own computers. Due to the large amount of exercises, there is also ample time while students are working on the directed exercises to ask one-on-one questions of the instructor.

This Lightroom class covers all of the basics of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic, so that the student leaves understanding and well-practiced on recovering images with exposure issues, and turning those, and well-taken images into brilliant, vibrant, beautifully balanced pictures.

This class also amply covers the why’s and how’s of Lightroom’s phenomenal file management system, and gives students exercises and homework on how to organize images to prevent losing files, and speed up finding the ones you want.

These are just some of the topics covered:

  • Getting the colors you want
  • Fixing photos that are too dark
  • Making colors more vibrant and life like
  • Processing photos for the web
  • Processing photos for photographic prints or magazines
  • Enhancing eyes
  • Bringing out details with sharpening
  • Reducing noise
  • Bringing back detail lost in over exposed sky
  • Salvaging images taken with a dirty lens
  • Cropping images
  • Correcting images taken at an angle
  • Tagging your images so you can find them instantly
  • Preventing disaster by backing up your images

What Do I Need to Bring to Class?

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic is now available bundled with Adobe Photoshop CC for a very low monthly price through There is also a 100% full functionality free trial version. Our Lightroom course is generally offered as a six weeknight class and you may need to purchase the full version of the software to complete the course.

Because image processing is a memory-intensive process, and more-so because Lightroom requires your images to file manage, the only meaningful way to teach the program is on the student’s own computer. As such, this course requires Lightroom to be installed on a laptop or self contained computer (like an iMac) to be brought to, and taken away from class daily.

There will be no computers supplied to the student in class as this would defeat the purpose of learning about file management.
